Stadhuis (City Hall) Leiden | Grand staircase
Part 1 of the city hall in Leiden. Just the stairs for now. The staircase was built as part of the city hall that was built in 1595. After a devastating fire in 1929, the city hall was largely destroyed, with the exception of the facade and the grand staircase, which survived the fire. The grand staircase is a symbol of the proud history and autonomy of Leiden as a city.
The staircase is richly decorated, which made it a real challenge to recreate in bricks. Keeping the stairs in proportion was also difficult.
